A Bonaire Getaway

Jan 27, 2024

Bonaire is one of our favorite places to visit, home to friends and many expats.  The native language is Papiamentu. A creole language that has influences from Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, and African languages. Dutch is the official language, but most speak English as well.  This island is 60 miles off the coast of Venezuela, but its Norwegian influence is everywhere.

Enjoy some of our personal photos here.

Places to see while in Bonaire include;

  1. Kralendijk: The capital city of Bonaire, known for its colorful architecture and vibrant culture.
  2. Bonaire Flamingo Sanctuary: A sanctuary for flamingos, where visitors can observe these beautiful birds in their natural habitat.
  3. Gotomeer: A saltwater lake that is home to a variety of bird species, including the Caribbean flamingo.
  4. Slave Huts: A collection of small huts that were used by slaves in the 19th century.
  5. 1000 Steps Beach: A beautiful beach with crystal-clear waters that is perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

The diving and snorkeling in Bonaire is fantastic!  Our favorite spots include;

  1. 1000 Steps: A beautiful shore dive site that starts off from the large number of steps down to the beach. It is a beloved destination for snorkeling, as it is a shallow dive site but provides beautiful coral reef and marine species.
  2. Hilma Hooker: A famous wreck dive site that has now become a thriving artificial reef. It has a colorful history and was seized for drug trafficking in 1984.
  3. Salt Pier: A unique dive site that is located at the end of a pier used for loading salt onto ships. It is home to a variety of marine life, including schools of fish and sea turtles.
  4. Angel City: A dive site that is known for its beautiful coral formations and diverse marine life, including barracudas, tarpons, and groupers.
  5. Something Special: A dive site that is located on the southern tip of Bonaire and is known for its abundance of marine life, including seahorses, frogfish, and octopuses.
